Incendies
That’s the most brutal, earth crushing reveals in modern cinema and that says a lot for someone who watched Old Boy. No music, no dramatics, Denis Villeneuve just put all of it on our laps and was like; here it is, just deal with it. My God, this is the most heartbreaking film I’ve ever seen.
The film’s masterpiece lies in its narrative style, jumping back and forth, retelling the mother’s harrowing journey through the war while the daughter is on quest to seeking information as per the will left by her late mother. It’s so smoothly done that it made the film a masterpiece.
The tragic of war. War collapses moral logic. The perpetrators and the victims can tragically become the same person. It erases all sort of identity and meaning to the victims. At the end of the day, the environment sadly shapes the way a person thinks/behaves/who they become. Environment sets the boundary of choice.
This has become, in my opinion, Denis Villeneuve’s magnum opus. It’s so emotionally charged that the audience’s energy gets drained by watching this film. The lack of music score was intentional, almost as if Denis wants it to be as emotionally raw and unmediated as possible. The long takes and the silence in this film work hand in hand and have become an excellent expressive tools that made this film a masterpiece. Beautiful film
