La Haine
A documentary-like, B&W stylized film with a ticking clock structure over a single day in the projects. It feels so raw and authentic. A film so real that it’s relevant in today’s climate
Marginalization, police brutality and unemployment rates in the projects often due to systemic neglect drives the frustration those people have because they don’t see a way out. So just like in the film, they cope by reassuring themselves that it will be alright and that’s where the recurring motif kicks *in:
“So far, so good”. *Symbolizing denial and pretending everything will be alright
”It’s not the fall that matters, but the landing” Almost expecting the worst but hoping for the best. The system was built to marginalize a certain demographic and a way out is almost impossible. Think of Hubert’s case for example: A young level-headed man who sees violence as an omen yet can’t escape it because of the surrounding circumstances. Violence is inevitable, not because the boys want it but because the system is broken
La Haine is the pinnacle of cinema. A truly masterpiece in storytelling. Beautiful film. Highly recommend
