Suspiria
Suspiria is one of the strangest yet most enjoyable movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching. This movie was such a mind-bender. It creeped me the hell out, but in the best way possible. The entire experience felt like a fever dream that I could barely understand, yet I could not stop watching. Almost every scene made me feel uneasy, confused, or hypnotized. It is one of those movies where you constantly question what is real and what is not, and somehow that only makes it even better.
About 50% of the time, I was telling myself, “What the hell is happening?” or “Why is that happening?” Everything in this movie feels bizarre and unnatural. Why is the entire room glowing green one second, then suddenly back to normal colors the next? Why did they keep giving her red wine every single day? Why did she randomly faint out of nowhere? Why did that black smoke or fog suddenly appear during the ending? Why did the dead girl, if that was even her, seemingly resurrect out of nowhere? And what the hell was up with the maggots falling from the ceiling? None of it fully makes sense, and honestly, I do not even know if it is supposed to. The movie feels more like a nightmare than a normal story, where things happen because they feel terrifying rather than because they logically should.
What makes it even crazier is how the movie somehow turns all of that confusion into atmosphere. The soundtrack is incredible and genuinely unnerving. Every piece of music sounds like something evil lurking in the background, waiting for something horrible to happen. I also liked Suzy. She feels isolated the entire movie, almost like she accidentally wandered into another world without realizing it. The cinematography was amazing too. Some shots genuinely made me uncomfortable because of how surreal and threatening they looked. That pool scene with the terrifying music especially stuck with me. Even simple scenes feel cursed because of the lighting, the colors, and the way the camera moves.
I think that is why I enjoyed this movie so much despite barely understanding half of it. It does not feel like a normal horror movie. It feels like stepping into someone else’s nightmare and being trapped there for two hours. The movie cares more about fear, atmosphere, and confusion than explaining itself, and somehow that works perfectly. It reminded me a lot of Eyes Wide Shut because both movies feel surreal, disturbing, and completely detached from normal reality, creating this weird sense of unease that sticks with you long after the movie ends.
