Many things to say:1. Briony don’t think that this makes what u did to Robbie and Cee right2. I’m so Laurie💔 (except I don’t go and marry her sister)3. I think this just rewoke my childhood crush on Emma Watson4. Biggest jumpscare in the world when I saw Bob Odenkirk😭

This film’s been sitting in my watchlist for as long as I can remember and I was so excited to finally get the chance to watch it. The hype I’d heard online described it as the greatest movie of all time. Yet, I find it unfortunate that I have to say I felt kind of disappointed. Not that it was bad; it was amazing, rather I believe it is too far beyond me at this time in my life. Deeply philosophical in nature, I can see the appeal, but I guess it just wasn’t for me, at least not the me now. The long, slow drawn out shots felt painful to me, as I fought to pay the film the attention it deserved. Hailed a masterpiece in world-building, I often found myself perplexed trying to comprehend how the Zone worked. It felt almost like prior knowledge was required in order to understand the film. Throughout, we are repeatedly warned of the dangers of the Zone, yet not once we see it, resulting in what would be high-intensity scenes feeling rather mundane. Of course, these are authorial choices, one which’s intentions I understand, yet tragically fail to appreciate. I kept waiting for a high point in the film, a moment of tension, unease, awe, but that moment never came. Instead, an anticlimactic ending that only served to leave me as confused as I was tired was what I got. Perhaps, it was my mistake in naivety for expecting something else. A film about 3 men walking in the woods as they spout philosophical discussions might not be just the thing my 17 year old brain is ready to appreciate yet. In time, I hope to be able to rewatch this and love it as many others do. Until then, it joins a long list of films waiting to be given a second chance upon the change of life’s seasons; 2001: A Space Odyssey, Come and See, The Godfather…

Fuck me ive seen gore but that nerve cutting scene to this day is the only thing I’ve truly flinched, curled and turned away from

Reviewing based off memory and nostalgia, due for a rewatch
