Hamnet
"What is given may be taken away at any time."
It has been a very long time since a film has devastated me to my core the way Hamnet has. This is such a beautiful story about love and the kind of grief that can only come from a love that powerful. It brilliantly shows how isolating and humbling that grief can feel. It builds and builds and builds. And then it's sudden. Every single moment captivated me and submerged me in emotion.
Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, of course, give two of the best performances of the year. I was charmed by their characters immediately. I fell in love with them as they fell in love with each other. I grieved as they did. They were phenomenal. Jacobi Jupe was transcendent. This might be the best performance from a child actor I have ever seen.
To me, this is Chloe Zhao's magnum opus. I will never recover.
