Nolan took every aspect of the epic that had substance, complexity and emotion and either brushed past it or removed it altogether to instead make more space for proving his ability to make as many explosions, battle scenes and overall a spectacle out of a poem which’s own foundation is sentiment and feeling. (Should have done an adaptation of the Aeneid or Iliad instead) fully got A-Level Classics war flashbacks Nolan stays consistent in not being able to write women - ignoring the complexity of their characters if he hadn’t cut them out altogether (Nausicaa and Arete???). The thinning down of Athene’s role completely bastardized the story in order to create a perfect, strong protagonist to appeal to a general audience who watches five films a year (Odysseus’ character holds so much intricacy that was just moved past). Furthermore, whilst I understand that Nolan was writing for a modern audience some of the dialogue felt so modern and casual that it took me out of the film. However some aspects of the film were great like the underworld and Circe episode, I genuinely think I would have really enjoyed this film if I didn’t resonate so heavily with the original source as it really was visually beautiful. One thing about Christopher Nolan is although his writing may be iffy at times each shot of any of his films would look like a painting
