Breath of fresh air after watching so many bad movies for this challenge. Why is this basically just 1960s mostly white Do The Right Thing. When Robert Redford climbs out of the river or whatever and collapses on the grass in a patch of sun and he looks like a fallen angel like if you agree. I do agree that he never should have played a Texan though sorry it just doesn’t fit. Marlon Brando, as usual, is absolutely fantastic (an actor like no other, I adore the part where he announces a murder and someone asks “do you think he was killed?” and he goes ”………yea.”), Jane Fonda, as usual, is the hottest woman I’ve ever seen. Robert Duvall is also stellar and strangely very sexy. If you have a type of any sort (in white people) they are in this movie. Couple weird pedo moments as is expected of this sort of film. I really really like the cinematography in this actually I can’t quite put a finger on it there’s this lovely vignette that makes everything look really sleepy, the score is incredible, the acting is compelling even from really insignificant side characters which I think helps to give it a really real feel. Normally I hate when films do the whole soap opera thing, I really hated every moment of twin peaks that didn’t focus on Laura Palmer for example, but I think it works here and I found myself actually compelled. I do agree with the common consensus of this being way too damn long—I get that the play was too but Jesus Christ bruh sometimes you gotta make the screenplay a little shorter. I also think the quieter moments of racial juxtaposition say a lot more than the louder moments of racial discrimination, like at Val Rogers’ party where the guests are all white and the chefs are black. Just a lot of really intriguing stuff. So yes. Bring back the old southern accent! Next: this property is condemned

“Get all the good you can out of 17, cause it sure wears out in a hurry.” True.. In bill goldman’s book he talked about two Paul Newman moments that sort of lingered with me: one where he was acting opposite Robert Wagner (who killed his wife by the way) and all he’s doing in this scene is standing out of frame reading lines from a script. Anyway Wagner is just so overwhelmed that he’s acting with fucking Paul Newman and it just pushes him into a new degree of inspiration and he just starts to bawl. And Newman is so pleased and shocked that he starts messing up his lines!! The second moment was an anecdote Goldman told where he and Newman were walking on the side of the road and Newman had a handful of rocks with him. And every time a car passed he would throw a rock into the forest so that whoever was driving wouldn’t see that it was him. Also at least once in the book Goldman interjects to add in a Paul Newman quote likely given as he was reading the first draft or something of the sort. Very cute. Goldman described him as the “least star-like star” he’d ever met. No one will ever have a face card like that AND a kind heart like that ever again.. We only shared this earth for one year one month and one day and it is an absolute shame that I didn’t know he existed maybe I could have met him. And I would have been a baby and he would have been dying of cancer but it’s okay. Happy (months) late 100th birthday Paul Oh yeah um this movie. It’s good. It’s long. Sad. A very interesting piece on masculinity for the period. You get to hear Paul Newman say daddy like 15 times for those intrigued. I feel like maybe I should like it (the movie) more but I’m altogether closer to indifferent than I am to reverent. I think part of this poster was in Joe’s room in midnight cowboy so I might have to do something about that…
