Monkey Man
this movie was so good! i love dev patels work already and this really met my expectations with the cinematography and directing.
the movie started off being a little fast paced but it was later paced much better. the storyline generally was kinda basic in terms of it being a revenge movie but what made it unique was the indian caste system, class divisions, transphobia (mostly in india) and islamophobia (generally and in india) being included in the story. i really respect dev patel for adding this when he didnt need to. the brown community really needs to talk about these issues and small steps like these really make a difference. i also think adding the lore about his mum and why he wanted revenge was shown in a pretty cool way.
dev patel's performance and the fight scenes were really impressive. i was expecting much more monologue but everything was more so shown by actions and inner thoughts which was interesting. when dev was speaking, you could sometimes hear his accent come through though lmao. also him speaking hindi 🤭. i felt so cool whenever a character was speaking or swearing in hindi and wasnt translated but i still understood it lol
the only thing i didnt like was how sexual some parts were. idk if im just missing something and it added something to the meaning of the movie but i did not need to see 2 ppl butt naked doing the devils tango 😭
overall, i loved the movie and i look forward to any other movies dev patels produces and/or directs and im glad hes getting the recognition he deserves 🫶🏽. im really happy a movie about desi culture that isnt a bollywood movie is getting popular in the west. it makes me emotional bc i never saw anyone like me in hollywood movies and now that i finally do, it feels so surreal. ily dev patel 🫂💗
