2001: A Space Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick
Starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain
Story: 2001 follows David Bowman as he is on a voyage to Jupiter with an A.I. who turns against him.
The Bad: Some shots go on for far too long. They will linger on something for thirty seconds when it could easily be cut down to five seconds.
The Good: This movie much like Star Wars, Citizen Kane, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy is timeless. The visual effects blow my mind and still look amazing today. Some scenes even look better than today. As per usual with a Kubrick film the cinematography is amazing and this is easily one of the best shot movies of all time.
In my opinion this is one of the most important movies in cinema. For one thing I think it predicted technology in the future very well. Stuff like video calling and video messages comes to mind. But especially with the A.I. HAL. HAL is not your traditional A.I. antagonistic. Its not like Blade Runner where the robots are being discriminated against, HAL is egotistical and will stop at nothing to complete his mission including killing his crew mates (which he does.) I find that the movies message of human progression will speak to you no matter what your belief system is and how human creation will ultimately be our demise. I feel as though this movie is more about the concept than the characters and honestly that's okay because this film has a powerful message.
