Apocalypse Now
The movie drudges along, punctuated by explosions and violence. In that way it captures the contrasting depressive and excessive elements of war.
A movie about trauma too and the handling of it by soldiers. Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, surfing, insanity. When you’re shocked by events so terrible that everything loses meaning. That’s what it was about.
The cinematography was really stunning. I saw the 4K Final Cut 3hr version and some of the shots were really quite something. The sets also deserve special mention. I’m not sure if it was shot on location but the atmosphere was always on point.
