I love this movie more and more the more times I watch it

This movie is brilliant and I’m never watching it again

Second watch thoughts: Zendayas performance is by far my favorite on second watch. Her limited screen-time is the curse of being a woman in a Nolan film, but alas she is still by far one of the best in the movie. I found, again, Matt Damon’s character in this(along with Emily Wilson) to lack the depth and complexity of Odysseus as a man and war hero. I feel like the most we ever get from him is his screams as he passes the sirens. Where are the effects of a war in his character? I found him to be stale, and thought if this film had more influence from Emily Wilson or someone who had studied the epic for a longer period than Nolan, the character could’ve been better portrayed. This is in no way Matt Damon’s fault and I’m afraid the monotonous portrayal may cost him Best Leading Actor. Anne Hathaway I love you. A Nolan female character has many sides to her! There’s a first for everything! After reading Emily Wilson’s full dissent on the movie however I felt pity for the fact that her character could have been so much more than it was. As I said, I read the full discourse from Emily Wilson prior to this watch and found myself longing for a version that can hold the magic(excuse poor word choice) that this epic serves. The characters and settings among the mythology is such a complex, fantastical piece of work. This film manages some, but not all, and I yearn for better adaptations MADE BY WOMEN! Make The Song of Achilles or Circe or Clytemnestra and give these extraordinary characters the justice they deserve. Final thought: I applaud Nolan for making this film when he did. To make two anti war movies in the wake of wars happening across the Earth is a brave and commendable thing to do, especially when you have a large enough audience to spread a message. That being said, I highly recommend reading Emily Wilson’s full commentary on this movie and reading the epic in order to appreciate the glory and tragedy of this story. More anti war movies and less AI slop!
