It felt like watching my childhood in a computer.
And it hurt me deeply because the whole movie was like me and my father in it. Just some simple details felt like it. Callum doing little handstands in the sea like my father did, Callum dancing and Sophie saying it’s embarrassing, Sophie understanding something is wrong with her dad… Just everything felt like my relationship with my dad.
I loved movie’s secret hidden details. Callum teaching Sophie how to fight so she can protect herself when he is gone, Callum smoking secretly, Callum buying a rug that he knows he cannot afford and then taking a cigarette he found on street because he cannot afford to buy one, Callum writing Sophie a suicide note, Callum telling Sophie to stop recording when he is upset so the whole videotape would be filled with just happy memories, Callum scuba diving even he doesn’t have a license… Just simple details explained the whole movie itself and this details told us indirectly that he is going to kill himself after their vacation.
The scene Sophie saying “Don’t offer things you know you can’t afford” and Callum crying in the room by himself after this hurt me the most in the whole movie. Maybe because it reflected me my own childhood. I eventually be sad by just thinking the scene.
