Obsession
“A love only the branch of a willow tree could conjure.”
the film is stunning; i fell in love with Inde Navarrette’s performance, the Hansel and Gretel monologue was something, the soundtrack really grabbed me too - i’m literally listening to everything on repeat. the makeup and use of uncanny valley effect is both really fascinating and terrifying. immediately noticed the DDLC references too <3
spoiler warning!!
one of the amazing details is the song “Love is in the Air, Pt.1” which sounds like a love song, however a note or two slips out of tune - you can be ‘possessed’ by love, and in this state forget about yourself, ignore your own needs and emotions, rely solely on your partner’s judgement, forgive any thing, do everything for them and try to please them at any cost, make yourself as comfortable for them as possible, and wait only for them - yet, deep down, or simply when the “curse” subsides for a moment (just like it was when the real Nikki woke up at certain moments), you realise that something is very, very wrong in the relationship.
this might be the scariest part for me, for now.
another detail is how Bear reacted to the presence of the real Nikki; how, from the outset, he did not want to suppress his desire but rather to alter it, prioritising his own needs over Nikki’s well-being; and how he was frightened and disturbed by her weird behaviour, rather than by the fact that she was suffering and begging him to kill her.
honestly, the main thing that terrified me is what Nikki had to go through. so while a picture is emerging, looking closely at the details becomes… emotionally painful. woah.
i guess even after getting exactly what they wanted, people can turn their backs on it, fear what they once desired so bad. even if in the beginning you’re perfect, just your partner’s dream - they still can later change their mind, run away, leave you to deal with an aftermath and all the trauma absolutely alone.
