Whiplash
Alright gang, Whiplash!!
This film marks a very stark shift in what I want from my life. To an extent I'll say Before whiplash and after whiplash are two different periods of my life. The way I look at cinema, how I perceive it and what do I want from cinema completely changed after Damien Chazelle ended his story with a depiction of obsessive madness by Neimen and Fletcher.
On other notes a few months ago I randomly had an idea that Whiplash is going to be my last film of 2025 for no absolute reason. 2025 turned out to be just one of those years that just went through in my head with the usual repulsion I have been carrying for a while. A few years down the line and I won't be able to highlight anything I adored this year (actually one thing is there), funnily this is the year I started earning and shit but fuck that.
If someone asks me what did I do in 2025, the only thing I will say is I tried watching film, a lot of films. Last year when I saw my Letterboxd wrap, there were 56 film logged in 2024 and in total I think I barely watched 150 films throughout my entire engineering. Kind of pathetic for someone who claims to love films. I was trying to make my own films in those year, most of those sucked ass, no wonder, I was barely enjoying my own medium. At the start of this year I just wanted to watch 10 films every month, I did cross that. In the process of hitting that number I discovered or rediscovered how much I like just exploring new films and finding out if this one is going to leave me obsessed with it.
Whiplash was one of the first ones to do that and today after finishing Whiplash I realised the idea of the young obsessed prodigy I had and the day dream I have had in the last few years all came out of this. But as the film ended it also dawned on me that the day dream might be over. Still young but there is no prodigy here, the obsession is their but the determination maybe not. Kind of a silly and naive thing to realize at 23 but yeah. Life has changed, day dream is gotta change, the game plans gotta change, I'm changed.
The only thing that's gonna stay constant is I'll be watching and thinking about film.
