Hooptober 12 — 30/35 Irreplaceable. It’s wild to me how it manages to stay so popular after all these years, but upon rewatching, I can see why. Ridley Scott set out the blueprint for how sci fi horror should be done, and it’s never managed to be topped. The framing, the silence, and the way that the camera lingers for what feels like just too long all help to build on this unbearable tension that modern horror films would kill to replicate. The Nostromo becomes a madhouse for a nightmare to begin, and once it starts it doesn’t stop. Sigourney Weaver still remains to be my favourite final girl out of any other horror movie. She manages to stay as the only character with any sense in the film, and she has to stand there watching her fellow crew succumb to the xenomorph, forcing her to take control at the end. Still, it’s not perfect. It takes a while to properly get going, but that wait becomes worth it. It’s a masterpiece in horror, and it can never be topped in its place.
