The Maxx
Weird, Crazy-Ass Animated Stuff #4
Even though this isn't a film, I thought I would shout them out and put them on the list (and totally not just cuz they were already on Letterboxd), especially since some of them are insanely good.
You may have never heard of The Maxx before, and I wouldn't blame you. It's an obscure comic character from Image from the 90s. To boot, he has an obscure miniseries that aired on MTV in the 90s. And why did I actively seek something like this out? Cuz I like comics, obscure animated stuff, and conceptually weird stuff, and The Maxx has it all. I would say that series is only thirteen episodes, meaning that while it gets through the main arc that the entire miniseries follows, it still feels like there's more to come.
For what it does give, it is conceptually out there and a deconstruction of the idea of a masked hero running around a city saving people. And while it does take a while to explain everything and connect the dots, everything surrounding that, from the characters like Maxx, Julie, and Sarah, to the amazing art and animation that uses many different mediums and styles, it overall makes for an entertaining, albeit short story.
If just judging from the poster and art that it's not your thing, don't bother. This series is HARD to find. But if it even piques your interest just slightly, I'd recommend seeking it out. Who knows, maybe you'll even dive into the comics after like me.
