Obsession
Ive really thought hard about why I love this movie sooo much. I think because its feels like the kind of movie that has a vibe thats going to be copied while you’re watching it. It feels like watching the star wars of this slice of indie horror, a thrill ride with real strong emotions on an incredibly simple concept. And in a way it feels light. Id also compare it to jurassic park in the way it escalates into a real feeling of being watched. The constant tension of watching nikkis face wondering if she’ll break out or stay in the curse is pure visceral cinema. The use of sound is ridiculous as well it doesn’t pull anything the emotion is real but its also conditional and haunted and can change on a dime. That was a real strength to me. It’s the kind of movie everyone wishes they could’ve made because its so simple but it’s deceptively simple and genius in execution. Its never leaves you in complete dread there’s always a sort of thing to hold onto and come back to. Idk I just really love this movie.
Edit: one thing i thought of now was how clearly this movie showed the difference between the body and the person inside the body and the metaphysical implications of that. It works because there’s such an unmistakable difference between whatever made nikki nikki is immediately not in her anymore. What is she beyond her body but obviously bear cant tell the difference. Its actually very spiritual. The soul as a transcendent quality to be taken apart or stacked with another more powerful corrupted soul. Its not just rape its taking away the literal essence of the person and replacing it with one more favorable to you. I haven’t watched a lot of posession movies where the split between where the demon and the person is so clear. The real nikki is literally nowhere to be found except when its obvious. The body as a vehicle for the soul is VERY ISLAMIC!
