I have nothing to add to the discourse around this film that hasn’t already been said; we all know this movie is fantastic. I just want to take a moment to shine light on how terrible the packing is for this movie’s recent 4K blu ray release.
This movie is only available in 4K in a “collectors edition box set”. When it was first announced this movie was getting a 4K release, the promotion showed this to be a behemoth of a set with tons of random collectibles and nonsense no one needed for over $100. The preorders didn’t sell well, so they delayed it and reannounced it in a much more reasonable packaging and with acceptable pricing. The problem is they wanted to keep this a collectors item and decided to package it in a magnetic unfolding case with a thick cardboard slip cover to make it seem special. I’ll give it to them, it’s made of really high quality material, but there are 2 glaring problems:
1: The disc is inside of one of the folds. So in order to get the disc out, you need to scratch it against thick cardboard. Not only that, but the amount of force you need to use to get it out of the case is insane. You have to pry open the sleeve and damage the case, and pull on the disc with a good amount of consistent, evenly applied force, until it decides to come out. Then to put it back in, you have to jam it back in the case. Who was complaining about the normal way discs have always been in cases?? Was this change made so more spoilers could be included on the packaging? That leads to the next problem. 2. The outer slip cover and each of the folds are covered in photos from the movie that give away each major plot development. I get there are very few people buying this movie who haven’t already seen it, but for the few who are blind buying this movie this is a stupid design choice. Why are you literally spoiling the entire movie for people that have somehow avoided the reveal at the end of the movie all this time????
I own a handful of films that have the same packaging issues. I don’t know which studio started this trend (I think it was WB?), but please make this stop. 😭
