Heat
all I am is what I'm going after.
WOW. Okay, fuck me. Everybody should know I cry like a baby with any movie, but it's usually due to a specific scene, whereas with Heat, I cried at the end just from pure bliss, this is one of the best fucking movies I have ever seen in my life hands down. Mann is very quickly becoming one of my favourite directors - I'm gonna have to retry Miami Vice soon (though I already love Collateral)
My favourite thing with Heat, and actually most Mann movies from what I can tell, is the leading men are all self-described lone wolves. They are all highly motivated characters with a drive that eats away at them and they simply can't make time for anyone else.
Another thing Mann does that I honestly don't see with a lot of action movies is he's so empathetic, he genuinely really believes every life matters. All his characters have nuance, Neil isn't just a bad guy and Vincent isn't exactly a good guy either. In fact Heat is pretty obvious in pointing out that they're one and the same, just on opposing sides of the law. And when these big shootouts happen, although people still die and the movie doesn't shy away from the reality of that, Mann has a big heart for all of those who do get hurt. Even with Chris and his storyline, you can't help but feel bittersweet.
I'm going to sound corny as fuck but this is really just an experience to me more than a film, it takes you through the aspect of so many characters and makes you feel something for all of them, nobody is neglected or unimportant and everyone has a story, good or bad. I really had no idea how things were going to go come the end and it's genuinely one of the few films I had to sit with the credits rolling just to process. I'm in love.
