Safe
Safe is a terrifying masterclass in self-erasure that functions more like a horror film than a drama. Todd Haynes frames suburban perfection as a toxic, suffocating cage, where Julianne Moore’s Carol White is less a character than a ghost haunting her own life. The film exposes how both her domestic prison and the cult-like "cure" at Wrenwood conspire to strip her of agency, merely trading one form of control for another. That final scene in the porcelain bunker where shes reciting empty affirmations to a reflection that feels entirely vacant is a devastating portrait of a woman who has finally, completely disappeared.
