Scorpio Rising
Kenneth Anger uses interesting shots to portray his own narrative, one where combined with the soundtrack, weaponizes the biker gang’s intense masculinity to become something sensual and homoerotic.
As for the prominent religious & nazi imagery, i believe that was just another way for Anger to convey the ideas of dominance, power, and (again) masculinity. The scene of one of the bikers walking around the city being split with the cuts of Jesus on his way to work miracles expresses the gang members’ sense of duty. These flashing images joined with the influence of songs like “Point Of No Return”, create a powerful use of contradiction.
All together, Kenneth Anger’s use of contrasting themes makes it an ironic statement about the desires of men, whether that be through sex, devotion to a cause, or power.
