Eric
be good, be kind, be brave, be different !
eric is an amazing watch, fresh and surprising to come from a netflix show. always so exciting to see cumberbatch in more dramatic and emotionally loaded roles when he brings such a raw energy to his performances. i will never tire of watching actors act. vincent's character development is played out wonderfully; the entire storyline and characters are allowed adequate time and the multiple mini narratives are well fleshed out, which is quite an achievement given the constraints of merely 6 episodes.
vincent as a main character is gripping, his personality very clearly delineated within the first half of the first episode. the rapid descent into grief-stricken madness and addiction is well paced and appropriately approached. nothing feels out of place or overdramatised, including the secondary storyline following ledroit. showing and not telling works in the show's favour, and therefore allows them to highlight the social issues in this particular time period without resorting to cliches and literal explanations.
i feel as though this role draws very slight parallels to patrick melrose with the whole breaking generational trauma and becoming a better father, again touching on alcoholism (? again??) also the nyc accent isn't majorly grating in this as it is in .... other productions, thankfully.
+ edgar made me giggle. that child dgaf he did NOT want to go home 😭
