Se7en
i can’t believe i’ve never watched this before, a 90s thriller film where a murderer kills his victims based on the biblical story of the seven deadly sins, something which i think is under-utilised in cinema.
starring some really big names (brad pitt + morgan freeman) se7en all in all a really amazing murder mystery, and one of the best of its genre, the seven deadly sins is such an interesting concept for a film and the idea of it is just really cool to me. the storyline is really simplistic, but somehow extremely effective. an unknown serial killer goes around killing a bunch of people who mirror the seven deadly sins, gluttony greed sloth lust pride envy wrath. the character dynamics between both characters in the film is really fun to watch, they were perfectly written and just work really well making an iconic duo. the gore is another thing which i was just completely baffled by, the killer is just completely twisted by his methods of torture, he force feeds an obese man loads of food while his hands and legs are tied up, and he ties a rapist to a bed while he literally eats his tongue to stay alive, the killer uses loads of air fresheners (really smart) to cover the smell, the men discovered his body and he was alive, but basically decomposing.. (he definitely deserves to rot in a cell while being half dead), they then find his house which is completely creepy, a red cross and really dim lighting with loads od pictures of corpses. in ways i see the point of the murderer as he kills ‘bad’ people.. rapists, drug dealers, prostitutes.. but something i don’t understand is how rape is even comparable to prostitution?? also he literally mutilates a girls face because she wants to look attractive.. he tries to justify himself but it’s honestly just laughable by his complete lack of logic. they then capture the killer (boo-boo) as he tries to pledge for insanity, and get in a car with him as he shows them the remaining 2 victims (envy and wrath) but the best part was definitely the end scene, where there’s a random box and inside is the detectives wife’s head, sort of symbolising envy and then as he shoots the killer that finishes it by showing wrath. this is quite a slow burn, and the pacing is kinda all over the place, but that’s my only fault, a lot of people have a problem with the lighting but i kinda love how dark it is.but it’s just kinda cool as i guess in a way all the victims perfectly match the seven deadly sin, a fat man as gluttony a drug dealer as greed a rapist as sloth (that one kinda confused me) a prostitute for lust. but the last 2 kills (envy and wrath) were my favourites by far, the killer was envious of one of the detectives as he had a pregnant wife, so he cuts her head off and the detective had wrath against the killer.. reiterating it that the ending sven is by far the best (peak cinema.) sort of actiony films over 2 hours aren’t always my thing, but this one is an amazing and entertaining watch from start to end, it’s unpredictable and has a very tense atmosphere.. also i love morgan freeman for some reason..
