1954, 72 years from now and a director makes such a beautifully shot meaningful movie. This is my first kurosawa film but i think i chose the right one to start with. Despite its runtime of 3.5 hours, it has a very simple plot of seven samurai fighting the bandits to save a village, now I think this simple plot elevates the movie due to the layers of meaning behind the plot. Seven samurai to me is actually a anti war movie, the cost of violence. The movie spells this out for you quite literally by the end but each scene really does help emphasize it. The grandma losing her children, the wife walking back into the fire or the realisation that the villagers did infact kill retreating samurai are just some examples, and i love these parts, the morality of helping people that may have killed your brothers and sisters, knowing that they too burnt down their villages, it is the cost of war. There is also a theme of social barriers, especially with the farmers daughter and the samurai romance arc but I felt this was overshadowed by the violence theme, but speaking out on such points would be quite helpful in 1954 Japan I assume. I love air tight scripts and this movie does use it well, 3.5 hours of well delivered dialogue that doesn't waste any lines is simply amazing. I found the humour quite weak tho, but necessary in a film with such dark implications. The runtime was not a breeze for me, but gave plenty of time to ponder and think so I'll take it. The music, and the beautiful cinematography are the icing on the cake for this masterpiece for me.
