Barry Lyndon
Criterion Spine #807
Good or Bad, Handsome or Ugly, Rich or Poor they are all equal now
This caught me by surprise because I usually would watch a Kubrick film and think that i’m automatically going to be swept away by his cinematic superiority alone, that was maybe the least of my worries watching this. Possibly one of the most captivating plot lines I’ve ever indulged in and there’s absolutely no reason why, you don’t know why this matters, you don’t know why you’re drawn by this character and you don’t know why you care but you do. It’s like the strings are being pulled and you’re just following along and i’m tired of saying this about Kubrick’s characters but they're just so elaborate his depiction of Barry is so entertaining to observe, all the while you don’t even really feel anything for him, you don’t mind if any misfortunes present to him and you’re not necessarily wishing any on him either it’s the strangest shit ever. The pacing was great it almost felt long but also I can’t say that every second wasn’t used appropriately and I just thought I was interesting to see his whole word unfold like anyone else’s because he’s still Redmond Barry at the end of the day. However, I wasn’t done with the film; it should not have ended on me.
