Queer
i want to talk to you without speaking.
queer confronts the desperation that comes as a side effect of isolation— a yearning for that connection that we all clumsily scramble for in life. i think luca understands and communicates human intimacy better than anyone else i’ve seen, and it makes his films reach so deep even if the subject matter may not relate on a personal level.
daniel craig does an excellent job at embodying that vulnerability we all carry. disembodied by the feeling of perpetual loneliness. the intangible nature of longing thats so difficult to verbalize, it instead consumes. it’s compelling to see these feelings we try to hide manifest on screen through lee’s character. i didnt find him embarrassing, albeit awkward— nor did i feel sorry for him. it felt really humanizing. you’re not alone in the ways you feel, which luca emphasizes through queerness, and you’re not an anomaly for having those feelings. much like queerness, embracing those qualities can be challenging. yet, lee’s character seems to overcome both, and theres a lack of shame in it that really feels comforting.
we all long for connection and we’ll all travel to the ends of the earth (or in lee’s case, south america) to find it. satisfying that longing is a primal, innate desire that should evade the shame that accompanies it. the film balances this concept between eugene and lee very well and it’s interesting to see how they both deal with it differently. this one’s gonna sit in the back of my mind for a while
