Alien: Romulus
I respected the original movie but I didn't think it was something for me. I really didn't have any intentions on seeing this movie but I'm so glad I did. This movie has good characters, beautiful design, interesting world building, well executed tension and moments that make you think. It's good at its most complex and most shallow level which make it a movie for just about everyone.
Andy and Rain are a great duo because they make us look at our sense of empathy in a very bleak world and also make us reconsider what it means to be a person. This movie doesn't vilify its synthetic characters but shows us just how vulnerable they are to this mega conglomerate ruled world this franchise takes place in.
This movie has an amazing retro futuristic look that doesn't work because it's quaint seeing how people thought the future would look but because it's so well designed that I was able to overlook how a society with 20th century computers created hyper sleep and androids. That's because details ranging from the wide arrange of purposefully placed buttons to the series of pictograms made the world feel like it was designed to function.
My only major gripe with the movie is that near the end it more or less rehashes the end of the original in a way that outside of being a bit more optimistic doesn't feel like much of an improvement. But that being said it's by no means bad.
While I imagine a lot of the enjoyment of this movie came from the theater experience there is ultimately so much going for this movie to the point where I think most will find a reason to fall in love with this movie.
