Mission: Impossible - Fallout
well shit it has to be one of the greatest action movies ever
at one point in the franchise (probably between 3 and 4) the mission: impossible movies stopped being average action flicks and started becoming spectacle films, and every new entry has tried to be a bigger spectacle than the last one. more locations, more action sequences, higher stakes and even more stunts, since tom cruise is suicidal, apparently.
and then you begin to think “well these movies follow the same pattern: ethan gets the mission (should he choose to accept it), gets his team, and at one point something goes wrong and the imf can’t help him at all so he’s left to his own devices, so he goes and save the world, and at one point theres the big scene, the big stunt advertised in the trailers.” and yes, to a certain degree that’s right. that is the formula that has worked for the m:i movies for the last two decades. So, 6 movies into the franchise, you would think I couldn’t possibly be surprised by something in this franchise right?
so did I, but fallout, good god. this is THE mission: impossible movie. It takes everything that has worked previously in the franchise and makes it 10 times better. And if you have watched all of them like I have, you can’t help yourself to think “this is the greatest m:I ever” when you see it. the helicopter chase from 1, the rock climbing from 2, bringing back ethan’s wife from 3, the stakes from 4, and even what I thought to be the worst part of 5, the villain, comes back in the most perfect way that I can’t even be mad.
but this isn’t just nostalgia bait, no, McQuarrie somehow adds to all this with his own things. when the plane sequence at the beginning started, I thought that it was just another way of doing the sequence from the beginning of 5, but when that aspect ratio changed (which hit like crack, both times that it happened) I realized this was a completely different beast. and this is cavil’s best role, especially for that bathroom fight jesus.
and fallout just has amazing action sequence after amazing action sequence after amazing action sequence without a single miss. I could talk about each one all day, because they’re so amazing that most of them clear the best action sequences from the first 3.
but it’s still m:i. they still do the mask reveal (which gets me every single time), tom cruise still runs like a maniac (the London chase sequence is his second best run, only because of 4) and it’s the team I’ve come to love and care about. This is the mission: impossible movie. and I love it.
and I must end this review by saying as I always do that tom cruise is a maniac. what is wrong with him. how isn’t he dead. what the hell.
