Ponette
“Why are you alive? To want everything”
**I want to keep wanting, otherwise what’s the purpose of living?
**
This has to be the best child acting I’ve ever seen. It’s not just because of how well she delivers her dialogues. Children usually are happy little creatures, so I believe it must have been really hard for a child to portray the kind of sadness that was required in this movie. Throughout the movie Ponette’s face carries this mix of pain, confusion, and a desperate ache to make sense of the loss of her mother. Every time you see her on screen you know she’s searching for answers and clinging to the hope that her mum might come back.
Navigating loss of someone you love is one of the most difficult thing, I can’t understand how much worse it would be for a kid who doesnt know how to cope with such a loss. The movie portrayed her struggle to understand and cope with this loss so well. I now understand why there are so many religious people in the world, it’s one of the easier ways to cope up with such a big loss.Everyone was trying to tell Ponette how to deal with this loss, but I’m glad that she was able to make peace with it on her own terms.
Before going into the movie, I was thinking that this movie was gonna make me cry because of the way it’s going to portray Ponette’s loss and the way she copes with it, but what actually made me tear up was her conversation with her mother’s ghost where her mothers explains her the importance of being happy and ‘wanting’.
So I say it again. I want to keep wanting, otherwise what’s the purpose of living?.
