Arrival
So good. epic. tragic. hopeful.
A clever and beautiful way of showing the human experience of what it means to be human.
Acting was incredible. My favourite aspect of this film was the sound and the score. Denis Villeneuve is no stranger to using sound as an added tool that aids and completes the visual language. A great example of this is when Louise (Amy Adams) makes direct contact with the heptapod inside their chamber and it's so quiet yet eerily loud. Adam's acting in this scene turns what would be an anxious moment into one that feels almost comforting - the heptapods at this point feel less like an alien and more like a stranger we are yet to get to know.
Given the state of the world right now, this film feels as relevant now as it was when released 10 years ago. "I forgot how good it felt to be held by you." The human need for connection versus time that continues to take from us. This film explores the capacity of human empathy, vulnerability and fear. I think we all need human connection and to “remember how it [feels] to be held” (both metaphorically and physically) now more than ever.
Overall a stunning film with incredible acting, pacing, cinematography (no surprise here) and story. Incredibly well written !!
