Updating my review. Last time I watched this I don’t think I was quite in the mood for a movie, or at least one like this. I didn’t quite get this movie, nor do I still. However, this viewing was much more enjoyable. How could one not enjoy such an impressive, personal, and stylized story? I’ve called Tarkovsky’s Stalker an abstract film, and while I still maintain that it is, this movie must be called his abstract masterpiece. This is without conventional structure, I would even say it rejects all standard conventions of cinema other than the bare necessities. I’m not a learned man in cinematic history so I cannot concretely say how influential and important this specific film is. But I can’t imagine it being seen as remotely unimportant. I could talk all day about what this film means to me as a young man and amateur film enthusiast, but that’s not what this is about. This is for people who are on the fence about watching this film. So, if that is you, if you are curious but not sure if this is worth your time: watch this movie. You must give yourself over to this movie to receive something in turn but boy oh boy is this worth your time.
