Parasite
It took me way too long to watch this film. First introduction to Bong Joon Ho and Korean cinema, and what a start. A masterful screenplay full of relevant social critiques balanced with thrilling moments and wonderfully dark humour. A poignant critique of capitalism, social class, inequality and the ongoing cycle of poverty is expertly crafted throughout the film, leading to the shocking climax. This film truly showcased the genius of Bong Joon Ho’s directing and gave him a thoroughly deserved Oscar win. The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous and was completely robbed of an Oscar nomination alongside the acting. This should have got a nomination for Song Kang-ho and Choi Woo-sik and maybe even a win. But Lee Jeong-eun as Moon Gwang absolutely stole the movie in her short screentime and delivers a sympathetic yet absolutely terrifying performance, absolutely deserving of an Oscar win. This should have swept more.
