Carrie
A car crash you can't look away from, in the most incredible way. De Palma makes a serious announcement with this one that he's the guy who can do whatever he wants with the camera and we, the audience, have no choice but to be in absolute awe of it. This may be the most stressed I've ever been in a movie, and the scene leading up to the prom king/queen announcement is such a masterclass in using the camera to build suspense with dramatic irony. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie bring such a great weirdness to these parts that blew me away, and the relationships between Carrie and Tommy, her teacher, and the girl who felt bad are so subtly heartfelt in their quietness that I was really moved by Carrie's depth and interiority! Travolta is also so creepy in this one, only rivaled by his vibes in real life! Perfect casting all around, and some really great 70s vibes to exist in for a while. Not sure we needed to see all of the classmates' bushes to open the movie, but I don't call De Palma "America's Favorite Pervert" for nothing! Also that girl couldn't leave her ball cap at home for the prom? 😂 all that aside, absolute banger, strongly recommend!
