happy to say this was not a bad way to start the year.

☆ was intriguing and interesting; the action works.
☆ Bateman and Egerton’s acting never fails.
☆ perfect christmasy-action movie: like Die Hard.

wished i’d seen this sooner.

☆ best way to describe it: aggressively and adorably punk rock
☆ music choices all throughout the movie were great (My Kind of Woman + the Watermelon song)
☆ ending was just great too: fast but not rushed + sweet but not corny
☆ has honestly become one of my favorite coming of age films
☆ amazing editing; dialogue is honestly perfect, so genuine to each character, many funny and cute one liners all throughout the movie.
☆ characters are on point
• Patty is truly one of the best romantic leads i’ve seen in a long time: she is shamelessly (as she should) herself—doesn’t need to change to get the guy, multidimensional, and total punk rocker.
• Simon (john Q) is so patient with Patty, he helps bring out that badass cool side of her, he always stands up for her (even if it’s in crazy ways—they’re totally called for) anddd he seems to genuinely love her. also, he’s a cutie patootie.

the right amount of edginess for a christmas movie.

☆ it made me genuinely laugh a couple of times throughout it.

☆ i liked its creativity (never have i seen a christmas movie with Satan involved)

☆ acting was slightly painful to watch but also cute at times (mainly referring to the child actors).
☆ and for what it is, it’s still a pretty enjoyable movie, it’s actually sweet and slightly emotional when it wants to be.

☆ in all honesty, i might start rewatching this every year.

“passable” almost “good”.

☆ the comedy and the cute moments work (quite well at that actually).
☆ portraying charming individuals comes naturally to both Steve Carrel and Ryan Gosling, so not much surprise there; good casting overall though.
☆ honestly, i think my biggest complain about this movie is the ending. and i am not one to criticize rom-com endings all that much but this one.. threw me off.

Cal (Steve Carrel’s character) is cheated on by his wife, he asks for a divorce and goes on to become a man whore (rightfully so imo), and even though it’s shown he doesn’t enjoy it that much—i don’t think that was reason enough to get back together with his wife. and i get it, it’s clear his wife regrets it, it seems honest enough but: what’s done is done. or at least that’s how it should be. because never throughout this whole movie was i rooting for Cal to get back with his cheating wife, that man deserves better! maybe not a whole new love interest (because that wouldn’t really work either—too soon) but certainly he deserves emotional freedom. and if ya really think about it, if the roles were reversed this would not be cute or funny or anything. cheating is cheating, and that will never be romantic to me. if they had tweaked the ending just a little bit so that Cal and his wife realized that they are better off apart (considering they have both hurt each other) it would’ve been a unique and great ending to a rom-com. sometimes, love/affection is not enough and that’s okay, especially because we have Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s characters having a cute ending as well.

but hey, i still enjoyed the movie.
