Bad movie. even if I had zero skin in the game and knew nothing about the odyssey, it would still be an incredibly flat and boring movie. people need to stop sucking Nolan's dick. Regardless of the above statement, I do have skin in the game, and this is what I think. The writers and directors of this movie have boiled this story down to one about a war veteran on the winning side of a conflict who feels just sooooo bad about all of the horrific acts he committed at war. It's basically just telling us how bad Odysseus feels without actually telling us anything about why what he did was bad, or anything about the people he did it to (sounds like an odyssey written from the perspective of a white British/American guy, huh?) Odysseus was completely stripped of his nuance and flattened into a boring, more palatable character in order to please an audience who cannot handle protagonist characters who are flawed. The context of the culture surrounding the story was also completely washed away. (Odysseus is allowed to murder and pillage innocents but we draw the line at letting him cheat on his wife.) The only god outside of Circe and Calypso that we see in this Movie is Athena, and she could be replaced with a rock and nothing would change. All she does is appear as an apparition and shake her head sadly at Odysseus from time to time. The other gods are completely absent (never mind that Apollo was referred to as the sun god, which he is not. this is not Percy Jackson.) The movie is also ugly, and for some reason, characters are wearing plate armor in ancient greece. Pattinson was fantastic as antinous. I will never watch this again.

movie was terribly uncohesive and wrapped up basically nothing. it felt like chunks of movie mashed together rather than a complete linear narrative. it did not deliver well at all on the decaying memory themes, which is heavily disappointing because it's so interesting. that said, it was fucking scary and the found footage scene was awesome. there was some great stuff in here which makes it more disappointing that it kinda sucked.
