Parasite
One of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen.
Every aspect of this movie is executed perfectly, Bong Joon Ho is an insanely talented director.
The story as a whole is a depressingly real portrayal of the wealth inequality that exists in South Korea, and goes to great lengths to show how terrible the living conditions for the impoverished are that all of the actions of the main family in the second act seem entirely justified. Oppositely, the Park family are written in this very realistically naive and apathetic way that slowly makes you loathe them, which builds so perfectly into the climax. The second half of the movie has such an insane tonal shift from the almost comedic tone of the first, creating a feeling of unease that permeates everything from the vacation sequence to the end.
The camera work was extremely impressive and well thought out, especially with the emphasis on wide, naturally lit shots in the mansion to contrast to claustrophobia of the basements both of the poor families live out of. I don’t know how this didn’t get an Oscar another nomination for its cinematography at least.
Parasite absolutely deserved its Best Picture award, I don’t know how I didn’t see this until its last day being on Netflix.
