Sinners
I really liked this one. It tells a beautiful story about systemic oppression and the ties between music and cultural identity that made it extremely compelling from a thematic standpoint. Beyond that, the story itself pans out in a way that built tension super effectively. I really liked the use of aspect ratios, with the camera widening to IMAX during the action scenes to contrast the claustrophobic tension of the rest of the film. Michael B. Jordan was great as Smoke, but the rest of his performance didn’t land right as Stack or in any scenes where he had to act against himself, which just kinda the setback of him playing two characters. I liked the use of Remmick’s character and Irish tap to draw comparisons between the Irish under British rule and African-American life in the jim crow south.
Solid pick for best picture and score
