Hamnet
utterly devastating.
my film of the year. jessie buckley oscar, paul mescal outstanding, jacobi jupe top 10 performance of the year.
max richter incredible soundtrack, beautiful costumes, gorgeous cinematography - especially the nature shots.
an absolutely beautiful story of love, loss and coping. incredibly moving throughout and it builds and builds until that final scene which is just heartbreaking but beautiful at the same time. it was amazing to watch that final scene unfold - as it all makes sense to you, it all makes sense to agnes, who has never quite understood her feelings about the future until this moment. suddenly she sees hamnet’s future right in front of her and she reaches out - and is able to hold him one last time. will watches from the background; a totally broken man tortured by his work and the loss of his son. he did the only thing he could - he wrote. he wrote for himself, for agnes, but mostly he wrote to give hamnet the future he couldn’t have. and it is devastating to watch, as we see the shots of hamnet walking into the darkness, through what we now realise is will’s set, finally brave enough with his mother watching him.
