Jaws
This movie is very Hitchcock. I mean that in the sense that it’s very easy to watch, it’s like consuming cotton candy it melts on your tongue. Hitchcock was a master of suspense and thrillers that didn’t delve too dark, they were lighter and more fun. Popcorn thrillers. Jaws feels very reminiscent of that, it’s fairly tame as far as horror movies go. It’s one of the few that includes child death which i feel helps to sort of punch up the stakes despite the fact that only like 3-4 people really die to the shark in the movie.
I’ve probably been heavily spoiled by modern horror but this is really not as scary as I remember it. Tense for sure yes, scary not quite. Like it is still a very good film don’t get me wrong but it almost feels so out of place compared to horror today. It’s so bright, it almost entirely takes place during the daytime. And they’re literally just beefing with a shark, like a normal shark. At least in this one it’s a normal shark we’re disregarding the other ones.
It also just feels like horror nowadays tends to always be slightly supernatural in nature. Some sort of ghost/devil/demon/demonic possession or just an evil messed up dude who's supernaturally hard to kill. But I think that's part of why Jaws stands out so many years later and why something like it hasn’t really been replicated since. Like I’m not saying its in possible but a lot of horror films in particular fall into these very familiar horror elements that I would love to see more outside of that box.
I’ve never seen Jurassic Park so I cannot personally attest to it being a 1:1 of Jaws with dinosaurs. But I can understand perhaps why it became so easy to replicate after the success of Jaws.
