Mad Max 2
"My life fades, the vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos, ruined dreams, this wasted land. But most of all, I remember the Road Warrior, the man we called Max."
Before Fury Road, I thought THIS was probably the best action movie of all time. It is still very high on the list, but this isn’t a Fury Road review, this is 80s punk aesthetic homoerotic badass car chases Road Warrior. George Miller is such a talented director it’s truly incredible. What he was able to do with this film and the first film in the series is so impressive. He builds a really cool world in both of these films I’m referring to, there’s really great action for a film in the 80s and there’s side characters that I really like. It’s hard to dislike this film for basically the same reason as Fury Road: it’s literally just an action movie with a bit of dialogue that moves the story along, but there’s some much deeper meanings aswell.
It’s hard for me to do a review of this film without comparing it to Fury Road because they are SO similar. I really want to talk about my theory and head canon of the series as a whole: Max is a folklore legend who is passed down from generation to generation. He is meant to prove that compassion and humanity are still very much alive during the darkest of time, even though Max just wanted to survive and live out his days scrapping by in this tragic world. Max may not even be real, he probably is an actual person or maybe he’s multiple people that have helped others throughout the course of time in the wasteland. I personally think that the first Mad Max actually happened. That is 100% what happened and the story of this man getting redemption for his dead family spread across the wasteland and has become a grand tale. I do think, in some ways, that both the stories of Road Warrior and Fury Road happened but maybe not the way we are seeing it on screen. Max may have just been thrown into the story to have a hero or maybe he was there in some ways. I want to talk about the major similarities between these two films. First of all, there’s shots in both films where someone gets hit in the face and there’s a slight flash on the screen. It’s a very nice touch and an awesome call back. We also have the major vehicle being very similar: the War Rig and the semi. I think the semi from Road Warrior may have been played up a lot to fit a more grand narrative that is Fury Road. We also see people tied to the front of vehicles in RW and Max is on the front of Nuxs car in FR. We also see a masked villain in both, we are shown strong female characters in both, even though Furosia plays a much larger role as opposed to Warrior Woman, they are both still on the rig with Max. There are many similarities and I could keep going but you get the point. Road Warrior is a phenomenal film, kino in every way, and we got a bit of a remake of it with Fury Road. I love this fucking movie.
