Before Sunrise
This is a top 3 romance movie of all time, could swap places with before sunset, honestly I think it comes down to personal preference.
You would probably think a low budget film of two people walking around Vienna talking would be mundane and boring, but this is far from the truth. Many romance films are unrealistic, have life altering moements, are grand and dramatic, but honestly this is not real life love for the most part. This movie makes two people talking feel intimate and real and the whole deceptive simplicity of it is what makes it perfect. It’s two strangers, in one city, on one night. Linklater turns this into profound by making the viewer understand that connection between people is not always a grand spectacle, but it could be as simple as being seen for a moment in time, as simple as having someone’s presence. This movie excels with the simple fact of the simplicity of the characters and the complexity of their thoughts. Two ordinary everyday people having a conversation that delves deep into many different topics.m
The chemistry between Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke genuinely feels real and doesn’t feel scripted at all, it genuinely feels as if Celine and Jesse are real people and to me is one of the truest representations of attraction and curiosity between two people in a film, I think it perfectly represents two people that are falling in love.
The cinematography is so simple but yet so incredible. It captures the beauty of Vienna and attaches the sites to the experience of the characters, which it displays at the end of the film when it shows the empty locations in which the characters were a part of which has a beautiful essence of its own, as if it were all a dream, leaving you questioning “will they ever meet again?”
