Drive
Ryan Gosling> you’re favorite actor
This movie reminds me of a darker more twisted baby driver. I really enjoyed the use of the score in the film, especially the iconic song nightfall in the beginning of the movie. I also liked the use of the slow motion scenes as it encapsulates the stillness and demeanor of the driver, while matching the feeling of the film.
One thing that did catch me off guard was how gruesome some scenes were like when Blanche got her head blown off or when he is stomping out the hitman in the elevator but they weren’t bad nonetheless, but at times felt unnecessary for the overall vibe of the film.
the neo noir loneliness of the character is something that I enjoyed. The driver is disconnected from everything around him and it adds a strange isolated but not weird feeling. Many of this can be felt through the silent unspoken tension between him and Irene, when all he can do is muster up a half smile, but on the outside he seems like a secluded person when in realty he has a soft spot for Irene, and this is all encapsulated when the gives her the goodbye kiss in the elevator.
I really liked the cinematography and pacing. I saw a tiktok once where I guy was talking about the different types of cinematography and this one really sums up the every day elevation, taking the mundane and making it significant and this is how this movie feels. The pacing also felt very patient and in tone with the driver, the stillness of the scenes where the driver was waiting for no more than 5 minutes really, captured the silence and stillness that gives the movie this quiet intensity that makes even the slower moments feel meaningful.
Overall this is in my top 10 movies and I can appreciate the performance how dynamic it is, with romance, action, thrill, etc. The constant shift in the tone helps to make the movie more enjoyable and gives it more layers to indulge in. The cinematography and pacing is enjoyable, and you also have to appreciate the performance from Ryan gosling and Carey mulligan, as well as the very strong and captivating score and different visuals of LA and for that I give it 4.5 stars.
