Thelma

“What do we need a gun for?” “It’s just a precaution, I like to be prepared.” “Do you even know how to use one?” “Well, how hard can it be? Idiots use them all the time.” * *In the spirit of the holiday season, I can say with confidence that this grandma can dodge a reindeer drive-by (or plow-by?) June Squibb plays the lead role of Thelma, who goes on a Tom Cruise-inspired mission to reclaim thousands that were stolen from her. Thelma is wholesome, endearing, funny and badass in a way that reminded me of my late grandmother - she was a delight to watch throughout the film. The supporting cast has familiar faces as well, from Parker Posey to Fred Hechinger (one half of the ginger duo from the recent Gladiator) to Malcolm McDowell (!) to the great Richard Roundtree (rest in power) as Thelma’s nurturing friend who tags along with her during her journey. In the midst of the action-packed chaos, I didn’t expect to dodge a tear or two during some scenes. I had a blast with this one. Now let’s get June Squibb a stunts award for doing her own in this movie!
