Oldboy
A revenge story within a revenge story. A prison within a prison. Do you revenge or seek the truth?
The ending really shocked me and pissed me off but i guess that’s why the movie is so great.
I still think the melodrama could have been spared. It could have ended at the moment the other truth was revealed and that way the thrilling essence of the movie could have remained as it had started. The elongated emotional moments felt somewhat like a K-Drama, changed the taste of the movie, that’s why it should have ended sooner.
But the editing does great justice to the story. Continuous-cuts that let the eye dance from left to right might as well be their own form of painting a thrilling scene. One that leaves us at the edge of the seat and wonder what’s next. Questions that are better answered through image and words left unsaid (in contrast to the unnecessary elongated monologue at the end that took away from this magic). The film doesn’t seek to make the viewer question the story (as one might assume at the beginning), but rather it dares to make us question if the beast that we empathized with earlier has the right to live.
