I remember the first time I watched Avatar. It consumed my entire life and quickly became an obsession. I was just a kid, teaching myself a fictional language because I loved everything about this film so fiercely, and I still do. I still cry every time, as if I’m watching it for the first time. I don’t think I’ll ever fully be able to explain how much this film means to me, but I could talk about its beauty endlessly. Everything feels familiar yet somehow new and brilliant all at once. The greed and destruction of man collide with a world that lives in harmony with nature and its creations — and that harmony is dismissed as savagery, as something barbaric, uncivilised. It’s a tale as old as time, and it’s heartbreaking to see it repeating itself even now. Still, Avatar remains a beautiful film filled with beautiful people, carrying a message that lingers long after the credits roll. Oel ngati kameie.
