Santa Sangre
Day 15, film 17/100 from the summer film challenge
Holy shitMy experience with Jodorowsky has been an emotional rollercoaster. After watching El Topo twice in a row I was amazed by his batshit crazy filmmaking, but then the holy mountain turned out to be a disappointment. So when starting this I was afraid this would possibly turn out as a disappointment as well, but It instead turned into his Jodorowsky‘s best so far.
To be fair the batshit craziness in this film wasn’t even that much, talking Jodorowsky standard. And for me it carried just the perfect amount of that, because the story wasn’t carried away by it, and it had everything a good movie needed: memorable scores, entertainment, unforgettable characters and amazing cinematography.
That was until Fenix eventually escaped from the mental asylum. Don’t get me wrong, the entertainment was still peak but It relied too much on forced events to get the story rolling that made no sense. But the film made a comeback and It was on it’s way to be a steady 4.
But all of that changed when the no sense plot began to make sense. Because I got blown away by an insane plot twist. It was like the missing piece of a unsolved puzzle that completed it into something amazing. I’m still blown away by it, just as much as I’m blown away by that ending. After having all of it processed this might just turn into a 5/5. What a masterpiece.
