Chinatown
Perfection. China town accomplishes everything a “modern” noir should accomplish. The plot, engaging, and the depth of characters and arcs are intricate and fascinating. “The Master of Transition” is coined by Polanski with this film. There are few films, if any, where I genuinely believe no cast or style could be replicated in a new manner— and China Town is one of those movies. I’ve watched this film four times now and I still look forward to understanding and uncovering new ideas. China Town executes a deeply advanced plot in a simply manner. Perfection is best realized with the viewer’s ability to engage in a story amidst constant breaks and overlaps, and yet, be OKAY with the movie’s unanswered ending to each undertaking. There isn’t enough good to say about this film, and I won’t sit here and try to understand it all. I know there’s more to say about cinematography, writing, etc— but just watch the movie and form your own enjoyment. In conclusion, it’s simple, it’s eloquent, it’s intricate, it’s everything a classic noir has, should have, and more.
