Brokeback Mountain
“There ain’t ever enough time.”
if i was to name any other romantic drama that has had this big of an impact on me i would be lying. it’s not lust or sexual attraction we see on screen, but rather the force that pulls these two people together is something that envelops them heart and soul, a tie that cannot be severed by time or by anything except the ever-present hesitation within themselves. the most symbolic scene in my opinion was ennis’ phone call to lureen, where she believed brokeback mountain was “knowing jack, a place he had made up in his head” because in many ways, that rings true. this is a love that will forever exist within one person, along with its joy, its hurt, the burden of how it was so suddenly stripped away and the words left unsaid. in the final scene, ennis swears to jack that he loved jack as much as he did ennis. with these three words there is an unspoken seal, now, on the past. moments uncherished, words unsaid, time wasted, and an eternal adoration, beyond the pointless fact they were two men, that he could only hope was mutually understood; all these things he swears he will carry with him forever.
