Rear Window
One of the best set-ups in a movie I've ever seen. Fragments of vastly different lives as observed through the spectacle of an apartment window, muffled and barely coherent conversation only understood through tone, soft jazz music throughout. All the lives and the moments that are not our own, bleeding into everyday conversation, preoccupying our minds. It's insane to see how well this murder thriller halfway turned unexpected trio buddy cop film still holds up more than 70 years after its release. With an incredibly fun reversal of gender roles where it's the women doing the investigative dirty work (and the man, conversely, literally immobilised and bound to a wheelchair), as well as Hitchcock's flawless utilisation of probably one of the most deliberately stagnant, limited film sets ever, stuff like this just reminds me time and time again why I love movies. All the suspense is derived from the confined subjective perspective of a psychologically wrought and more simply bored cabin-fever-ridden protagonist, so half the film's progression is the audience being dragged through a pendulum between wondering whether the murder is true or a mere manifestation of delusion. So entertaining, such beautiful technicolour cinematography, such talented actors - NO NOTES!
