Man

The first movie is leaps and bounds ahead in most aspects, but Day of the Soldado retains the grim and cruel heart (or lack thereof) which made the first a devastating film I couldn’t turn away from. Benicio and Brolin are doing a lot more heavy lifting this time around, as the story is a bit more haywire and the cast around them (Merced is alright but not much is asked from her) fails to engage the audience meaningfully. But both of them as always are up to the task and they deliver the much-needed firepower that keeps this movie afloat. Bring back these two for the third installment and I will be there.

Hoffman and Jonsson are great! The rest of it is pretty bad. This movie is desperately trying to say something but I’m not sure what it is nor do I care. The dialogue is mostly not good, especially from that one Olsen guy that guy sucked. I’m not sure why we needed Mark Hamill for the most one-note irrelevant villain possible. I’m removing half a star from this as I write this. Bad!

This had much more of a kick than I expected. Delivers a healthy dose of fun while also being surprisingly heartfelt. Gotta be the best Channing Tatum performance I’ve seen (maybe in 2026 we finally get around to Foxcatcher)
